An AI agent that does real work costs between $8 and $500 a month on a subscription, or a $6 to $25 server plus model tokens if you run one yourself. Credit plans such as Lindy, Manus and Viktor sell a pot of credits; ChatGPT, Claude, Grok and Gemini put an agent inside plans from $20 to $500; and a self-hosted agent pays per token, which for a 30-step research task works out from under 10 cents on a small model to about $3.50 on a frontier one. The number on the pricing page matters less than the cap behind it, because the cap decides what a busy month costs.

Construct's plans are $9, $59 and $299 a month with model usage included, metered in a four-hour window and a monthly allowance. The section on Construct below shows where a heavy user runs into each limit.

The three ways to pay, side by side

Subscriptions with credits

A credit is a vendor's own unit for "work done", and each vendor converts tasks into credits differently. Most do not let unused credits carry over.

Credit-based AI agent plans, checked October 26, 2026, sortable by column
CellCog$8 (Starter)800 a monthValid 60 days after the periodNot documented
Lindy$29.99 per active user3,000 per user, pooledNo$50 in credits for 7 days
Manus$20 (Pro)4,000 a monthNo300 credits a day
Viktor$100 per workspace (Team)40,000, sharedFor one monthUp to $100 in credits, no expiry

The fine print is where the cost moves. Lindy bills "every active user in your workspace", and "anyone who uses Lindy takes a seat", including someone who only @mentions it in Slack; top-ups are $10 per 1,000 credits (Lindy pricing). Manus clears unused credits "on the original renewal date, even if you upgrade mid-cycle", and its always-on Cloud Computer is $30 or $50 a month on top (Manus credit rules, Manus pricing, Cloud Computer billing). Viktor is the most transparent: it says a quick task takes 100 to 300 credits and a complex workflow 500 to 1,500, so its $100 plan covers roughly 26 to 80 complex workflows a month (Viktor pricing). CellCog's terms say "We do not and cannot provide reliable cost estimates per task" and that "All payments made to CellCog are final and non-refundable" (CellCog terms, billing guide).

The complaints follow the same line. Lindy has a 1.9 out of 5 TrustScore from 41 reviews, and one reviewer wrote on August 20, 2026, "I managed to kill my months credits (3000) in one day!" (Trustpilot). Manus sits at 1.2 from 209 reviews; on October 6 a reviewer who had upgraded mid-cycle wrote that "When the next billing cycle started, 31,132 unused credits expired" (Trustpilot).

An agent inside a big-lab subscription

ChatGPT, Claude, Grok and Gemini now each include an agent that works in the background, priced as part of a personal subscription. The agent draws on the same usage allowance as your chat.

Google AI UltraFrom $99.99Tasks in GeminiPlan limits

ChatGPT's tiers come from reporting on OpenAI's September 29 announcements, because OpenAI's pages blocked our fetch: every Pro tier includes one dot, Pro subscribers in the EEA, Switzerland and the UK were excluded at launch, and the $200 plan dropped from 20x to 10x Plus usage for everyone on October 30, 2026 (SiliconANGLE, Codersera). Claude's prices are on claude.com/pricing. xAI's tiers are on its X Subscription pricing page, which says "Plus does not include Grok Bot". Google's subscriptions page lists Tasks in Gemini under Ultra only, while its help page says AI Pro or Ultra; both agree it is for personal accounts and not available in the EEA, Nigeria, Switzerland or the UK (Google AI plans, Gemini Apps Help).

These plans are good value if you already pay for the assistant. They are bought per person, the agent shares a cap with your everyday chat, and none of them is built for a team sharing one agent.

Self-hosting: a server, tokens and your time

Open-source agents such as OpenClaw are free to download, so the bill has three parts: a server, the model tokens, and the hours you spend on setup and upkeep.

A small server is cheap. DigitalOcean's 4 GiB droplet is $24 a month, Hostinger's KVM 2 is $8.79 a month on its introductory term and $14.99 after, and Hetzner lists a 4 GB server at €5.99, though its cost-optimized plans showed as unavailable when we checked (DigitalOcean, Hostinger, Hetzner).

Tokens are where the range is wide, because an agent sends the growing conversation back to the model at every step. Take a 30-step research task that averages 25,000 input tokens and 800 output tokens per step: 750,000 tokens in, 24,000 out. These are round numbers for the arithmetic, not a measured run, and prompt caching would lower the input cost.

Token cost of one 30-step agent task at list prices, checked October 26, 2026, sortable by column
Claude Haiku 5.5$0.10 / $0.50$0.09$1.91
DeepSeek V4.1 Flash$0.30 / $1.20 at peak hours$0.25$5.58
Gemini 3.8 Flash$0.75 / $3.75 until December 31$0.65$14.35
Claude Sonnet 5.5$2 / $10$1.74$38.28
GPT-6.1 Sol$2 / $10$1.74$38.28
Claude Opus 5.5$4 / $20$3.48$76.56

Prices are from Anthropic, DeepSeek, Google and OpenAI. Ten such tasks a day on Sonnet 5.5 would cost about $383 a month in tokens alone. OpenClaw 2.0 can also reuse an existing ChatGPT or Claude subscription instead of an API key, which turns the token bill into that plan's usage cap (OpenClaw).

Then there is your time. OpenClaw's own docs say "Sandboxing and exec approvals are off by default" (OpenClaw), so making it safe to connect to business accounts is part of the setup. If setup takes a day and upkeep an hour a month, price those hours at what your time is worth before you call self-hosting cheap. Construct vs OpenClaw covers that trade in detail.

Model usage is metered in two windows. One is a four-hour block aligned to UTC (midnight, 4am, 8am and so on); the other is the calendar month, also in UTC. A single four-hour window can use at most about a sixth of Lite's monthly allowance, an eighth of Starter's and a twelfth of Pro's. That is how a heavy user meets the limits: on Lite, an afternoon of back-to-back research can fill one window, and six afternoons like that use the month. Starter and Pro stretch the same pattern across more and larger windows. Usage is pooled on the workspace owner's plan, and there is no seat fee, so teammates draw on the same allowance.

When a window runs out, chat shows "Session usage limit reached" or "Monthly usage limit reached" with the time it resets, and new turns wait until then. A scheduled run that falls inside a spent window fails and is recorded in its history, and the schedule stays on for the next one. There are no credit top-ups to buy. On Pro, a setting called Model source decides what happens instead: "Construct" uses only the included usage, "Mine as backup" switches to your own OpenRouter, OpenAI, Anthropic, Amazon Bedrock or xAI key once the included usage runs out, and "Only mine" always uses your key, with an optional monthly spend limit you set.

The included usage stretches as far as it does because of the model choice. Construct runs agent turns on Claude Haiku 5.5 first and falls back to DeepSeek V4.1 Flash, GLM-5.3-Flash and Gemini 3.8 Flash automatically when it cannot use Haiku. In our own test on October 25, 2026, 14 tasks run three times each, Haiku 5.5 passed 37 of 42 runs and Sonnet 5.5 passed 38, at 19 times the cost per success.

The other limits that bite are concrete. Terminal commands currently stop after five minutes on every plan, so a long data job needs splitting. And the agent's own inbox has a daily sending limit, lower on Lite than on Starter and Pro. New accounts get a small one-time allowance on Lite's limits before choosing a plan, and Pro has a 7-day trial.

How does it compare with a virtual assistant?

If the alternative is a person, the agent's plan price is the small number. A virtual assistant working 20 hours a week at $15 an hour costs about $1,300 a month, and the real swing comes from how long it takes you to check the agent's work: at $50 an hour of your time and 78 agent tasks a month, each extra minute of review per task costs about $65. A VA at 20 hours a week and $15 an hour costs about $1,300 a month. Moving 30% of the tasks to an agent leaves $910 of VA time, plus a Construct plan at $9 (Lite), $59 (Starter), or $299 (Pro) a month, plus 3.9 hours of review a month.

What is the cheapest AI agent?

The cheapest paid plan we found is CellCog Starter at $8 a month for 800 credits, a dollar under Construct Lite. Billed yearly the two are close: CellCog Starter is $88 a year, about $7.33 a month, and Lite is $7.50 a month. CellCog says its AI employees get their own cloud computer and work in scheduled shifts, but its pages do not say which plans include that, and every payment is non-refundable (CellCog AI employees). Below that, the free options are Manus Free at 300 credits a day for small tasks, Viktor's up to $100 in credits that never expire, Lindy's $50 of credits for a week, and a self-hosted agent on Haiku 5.5, where a weekday research task costs about $2 a month in tokens plus a server and your time.

Cheapest on paper is rarely cheapest in a busy month. Price the week your agent works hardest, in whatever unit the plan caps.

Estimate your own month in four steps

  1. List the jobs you would hand over and how often each runs. A daily digest is about 22 runs a month; a weekly report is 4 or 5.
  2. Find the unit each plan caps: credits, a usage window, tokens, or steps per task. Ask the vendor how many units one of your jobs uses, or run it once on a free tier and read the meter.
  3. Price your busiest week and multiply by four, and size the plan for that month.
  4. Add your review time. A job that takes 10 minutes to check every day costs you more than most plans.

How we checked this

Competitor prices and quotes were read on the vendors' own pages on October 26, 2026: Lindy, Manus (help center pricing marked "updated this week"), Viktor, CellCog's pricing, billing guide and terms, Claude, the X Subscription docs, Google's subscriptions and help pages, Trustpilot, and the API pricing pages for Anthropic, DeepSeek, Google and OpenAI. OpenAI's ChatGPT pages blocked our fetch, so its plan details rely on SiliconANGLE and Codersera. Construct's limits were checked in its source code on the same day: plan limits, the four-hour and monthly usage windows and their ratios, the limit messages, the scheduled-run behaviour, the Model source options, the model fallback order, daily email caps, the five-minute command timeout, and the benchmark notes behind the model choice. The token table is arithmetic on stated assumptions, not a measured run.

Frequently asked questions

Do AI agent credits roll over to the next month?
Mostly not. Lindy's and Manus's monthly credits expire at the end of each cycle, and Manus clears them on the renewal date even if you upgraded mid-cycle. Viktor's roll over for one month, and CellCog's stay valid for 60 days after the billing period. Construct has no credits: its monthly usage allowance resets on the first of the month (UTC), and unused usage does not carry over either.
Can I use my own API key to make an AI agent cheaper?
Sometimes. Construct Pro has a Model source setting that can switch to your own OpenRouter, OpenAI, Anthropic, Amazon Bedrock or xAI key once included usage runs out, or use only your key, with a monthly spend limit you set. Manus Flex accepts keys through OpenRouter, Fireworks or Modal, but other infrastructure still uses Manus credits. A self-hosted agent such as OpenClaw always runs on your own key or an existing ChatGPT or Claude subscription.
What happens when an AI agent runs out of credits or usage mid-month?
It depends on the product. Manus will not start a new task at or below zero credits. Perplexity skips a scheduled task when credits run out and pauses it after repeated skips. Construct shows "Session usage limit reached" or "Monthly usage limit reached" with the reset time; a scheduled run that lands in a spent window fails and is recorded, and the schedule stays on for the next run.
